Pau Casals is still considered, even 150 years after his birth, one of the greatest cellists of all time, in addition to being an orchestra conductor, composer, humanist and a determined defender of freedom and democracy. This concert pays tribute to him with the young cellist Pablo Ferrández that will interpret along with the Vallès Symphony Orchestra one of the concertos often played by Casals and which he recorded on two occasions, the Cello Concerto in E minor by Edward Elgar. The concert will begin with Casal’s facet as a composer, performing his sardana Sant Martí del Canigó, written in 1943 during his exile in Prada de Confluent and inspired by the poem by Jacint Verdaguer, a symbol of his beloved Catalonia. Stories of doomed love attracted Tchaikovsky, and Shakespeare’s tragedy and the composer’s tortured life produced a masterpiece like Romeo and Juliet, Overture-Fantasy that summarizes the Shakespearian story in 20 minutes with great drama and beauty.
