The Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès brings 'Psycho' to the big screen with a live score

The Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès (OSV) presents Psycho in Concert, an experience that combines cinema and live symphonic music, arriving just in time for the season best suited to tales of terror. The orchestra, conducted by Julian Bigg, will perform Bernard Herrmann’s score live while Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is screened in its entirety, in the original English version with Catalan subtitles.

The concerts will take place on Friday 30 October at 8:00 pm at Teatre La Faràndula in Sabadell, Saturday 31 October at 6:30 pm at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona and Sunday 1 November at 6:00 pm at the Factoria Cultural de Terrassa. The performance runs for 110 minutes, with no intermission.

A score that changed the history of cinema

Psycho is one of the films that marked a turning point in the thriller genre, yet it cannot be understood without Bernard Herrmann’s music. Written for string instruments, the score is one of the most iconic and recognisable in film history and heightens the tension and dread of every scene. The most famous example is the shower sequence, which Hitchcock had conceived without music: Herrmann wrote it anyway, convinced that the image needed it, and the director, upon hearing it, added it to the film.

Heard live, with the power and tonal richness of the OSV, this music takes on a new dimension. Audiences will be able to rediscover the film in a way quite different from how they have seen it before: an immersive experience in which notes and images go hand in hand, scene by scene.
