The Fundació Òpera a Catalunya sells out tickets for Nabucco by G. Verdi

26.02.2025

On February 19, Nabucco premiered at the Teatre La Faràndula in Sabadell, where it also had three more performances on Friday, February 21, Sunday, February 23, and Wednesday, February 26, all with sold-out tickets.

The production will have a total of 15 performances in 11 cities, covering almost all the theaters in the Òpera a Catalunya circuit until March 23. After Sabadell, Nabucco will arrive in Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona (with two performances at the Palau de la Música Catalana), Vic, Lleida, Manresa, Tarragona, Granollers, Reus, Girona, and Viladecans.

Tickets are still available for the performances at the Palau de la Música Catalana on March 1 and March 15.

The stage direction is by Carles Ortiz and is a revised version of the production presented in 2013 as part of the Òpera a Catalunya cycle. The musical direction will be led by Sabadell-born conductor Sergi Roca Bru. In the Sabadell performances, baritone Luis Cansino will play Nabucco, soprano Maribel Ortega will take on the role of Abigaille, and bass singers Alejandro Baliñas and Jeroboám Tejera will share the role of Zaccaria. The production also features soloists Vicenç Esteve and Nacho Guzmán as Ismaele, Carol García as Fenena, Juan Carlos Esteve as Gran Sacerdote, Roberto Redondo-Sainz as Abdallo, and Laura Gibert as Anna.

The third production of the season is a revised version of the one staged in February-March 2013 within the Òpera a Catalunya Circuit. It is a classical revival that transports the audience to ancient Mesopotamia. The entire plot unfolds on a chessboard surrounded by walls and monumental elements, where the protagonists carry out their military, political, religious, and even romantic strategies.

As in previous performances of this Nabucco, stage and costume direction will be handled by Carles Ortiz, with whom Òpera a Catalunya regularly collaborates. Musical direction will be in the hands of Sabadell-born Sergi Roca Bru, an internationally renowned conductor currently serving as Kapellmeister at the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Landestheater in Flensburg, Germany. Stage direction is completed by assistant director Jaume Sangrà and set designer Jordi Galobart.

The cast will be led by two singers well known in the Òpera a Catalunya cycle, both of whom have previously performed in Nabucco. The title role will be played by Galician baritone Luis Cansino, a regular in major international opera seasons and recipient of numerous awards from institutions in Spain, Colombia, Peru, and Mexico. Meanwhile, the challenging role of Abigaille will be performed by Jerez-born soprano Maribel Ortega, a frequent presence on the main stages of Spain and abroad, who has sung most of the leading roles in the dramatic lyric repertoire.

The production also features the voices of Galician bass Alejandro Baliñas, winner of the prestigious Neue Stimmen International Singing Competition 2024, and Tenerife-born bass-baritone Jeroboám Tejera, a regular in the Òpera a Catalunya season, both of whom will play Zaccaria. The tenor role of Ismaele will be shared by Barcelona’s Vicenç Esteve, a familiar name in Spanish opera seasons, and Argentine tenor Nacho Guzmán, a member of the Sabadell company’s chorus who debuted as Calaf in Turandot with the FOC. Sabadell-born mezzo-soprano Carol García, with an extensive national and international career specializing in bel canto, French, and Baroque opera, will play Fenena. The cast is completed by bass Juan Carlos Esteve (Gran Sacerdote), tenor Roberto Redondo-Sainz (Abdallo), and soprano Laura Gibert (Anna).

As in all productions, the soloists will be accompanied by the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès (principal conductor: Xavier Puig) and the Cor Amics de l’Òpera de Sabadell (conductor: Daniel Gil de Tejada). This production marks the first under the artistic direction of Jordi Torrents, who took over from Mirna Lacambra in January 2025. However, the artistic vision for Nabucco is the result of a transitional period during which Torrents and Lacambra worked together.
