PROGRAMME

Opera Turandot
Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924)
Opera in three acts (with Catalan surtitles).

Libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni.
First performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on 25 April 1926. First performed in Catalonia at the Gran Teatre del Liceu on 30 December 1928.

Turandot, Puccini's posthumous opera and his great masterpiece, is undoubtedly one of the key works of the opera repertoire.

The Fundació Òpera a Catalunya and the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès are once again staging a major opera production at the Palau de la Música.

In Turandot, extremely popular due to its spectacular nature, Puccini abandoned his realistic approach, instead serving up a drama set in a mythical China. In an empire where fear reigns, the cruel Princess Turandot sentences to death her suitors when they fail to solve the three riddles she sets them. Despite the prospect of almost certain death, they continue to flock to Beijing. Prince Calaf, on seeing Turandot’s beauty and power, decides to accept the challenge. He falls in love with her at first sight and is ready to risk everything to win her heart. Calaf solves the three riddles, but Turandot does not give up. The prince sets her a riddle, telling her that if she discovers his name before sunrise, he will die at dawn. With the help of Liù, the sweet young slave girl, Calaf keeps his name a secret to the end.

A complicated and enigmatic story served by a majestic, spectacular score, which includes the aria "Nessun dorma", one of the most acclaimed of the entire operatic repertoire, along with other outstanding musical moments such as the arias "In questa reggia" (Turandot ) or "Tu che di gel sei cinta" (Liù).
