The OSV educational project and the primary school
As well as the benefits obtained from the act of creating and performing music, this project provides the teachers in the schools with a series of tools which permit cross-fertilization with some of the other general objectives established in the primary school curriculum.
Some examples:
PERSONAL
• Autonomy
• Expressivity
• Discipline
• Assessment criteria/critical thinking
• Self awareness and self confidence
• Emotional capacity
INTERPERSONAL
• Respect for others
• Ability to participate in group work
• Problem solving ability
• Communicative skills
SOCIETY
• Diversity
• Cultural awareness
In the assessment session which was held with the musicians from the OSV and the teachers from the school, the following points were discussed:
Teachers:
• the value of this project resides in the fact that it works on different levels; the practice of music is simultaneously an end in itself and a useful tool for the acquiring skills from other disciplines.
• group work produces immediate benefits, in particular with pupils who tend to be socially excluded for personal or cultural reasons.
Musicians:
• the children who participated in the experience show a level of attention in the rehearsals that is very different to the usual level, and they transmit their interest to their parents.
• This experience has demonstrated that it is possible to find different formats which do not substitute but widen the concert format and permit the sharing of the love of music.
